Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel,  Samuel Johnson, 1775.

In 1908, Mark Twain added He is the man who talks the loudest.

In 1775, George Washington said Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.

And 100 years ago Clarence Darrow wrote True patriotism hates injustice in its own land more than anywhere else.”

These statements have never been truer.

Waving the flag does not make one a good citizen, nor does living in an “us versus them” world. A true patriot is someone who looks critically at the nation, works tirelessly to fix problems without regard for personal safety, career, or profit, and actively defends the nation against real threats to peace, safety, and the principles of the Bill of Rights.

How many politicians would fit this definition? Is there anyone in the Trump camp who would not put their personal careers, greed, and ambition above everything?
