Progressives want progress, and America needs progress more than ever these days. By almost any measure of social well-beingeducation, health, social justice and equalitythe country’s comparative ranking has declined. Take this recent survey on relative social justice, cited in a recent New York Times editorial: the U.S. ranks 27th overall, out of 31 countries surveyed.

This sorry status is closely linked to similarly low American rankings in the other indicators of social well-being, and our overall decline reflects decades of growing injustice and inequalitya lack of progress. It is the desire for progress that drives the “Occupy” movement, and it is this same desire for progress that wants to address at the local level. We need to reverse our backward slide and start moving forward again.
